Performance of the TCP Protocol over ATM Networks

چکیده
The segmentation process requi to carry TCP trafc over ATM networks can have an important e ect on the network performances. The e ciency of the TCP protocol over ATM networks is compared with the unfragmented TCP tra c, the comparison being based on the aggregate network throughput and on the throughput provided to single connections. Only a single switch with one-way tra c is considered; connections with di erent propagation delays are examined, to cover the LAN, MAN and WAN scenarios. Two main e ects due to the segmentation process are presented: the tra c synchronization and the useless tra c over the link. The ATM segmentation process reduces the aggregate network throughput, while its e ect on the fair allocation of bandwidth can be considered negligible.

A new ATM adaptation layer for TCP/IP over wireless ATM networks
This paper describes the design and performance of a new ATM adaptation layer protocol (AAL-T) for improving TCP performance over wireless ATM networks. The wireless links are characterized by higher error rates and burstier error patterns in comparison with the fiber links for which ATM was introduced in the beginning. Since the low performance of TCP over wireless ATM networks is mainly due t...
متن کاملTcp/ip over Atm - Performance Evaluation and Optimisation
The integration of TCP/IP and ATM is a challenging architectural issue in today’s global networks, where the unique properties of ATM technology can be combined with the TCP/IP mature and well-proven protocol suite. A rigorous characterisation of the performance of TCP/IP over ATM can be a powerful tool for the efficient use of both technologies. TCP error and flow control mechanisms were desig...
متن کاملTcp Performance Improvement over Wireless Atm Networks through a New Aal Protocol
This paper describes the design and simulation of a new AAL protocol (AAL-X) for improving TCP performance over wireless ATM networks. The wireless links are characterized by higher error rates and burstier error patterns in comparison with the fiber-based links for which ATM was designed. Since the poor performance of TCP over wireless ATM networks is mainly due to the fact that TCP always res...
متن کاملPerformance Bottleneck of TCP/IP over ATM in Local Area ATM networks
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is accepted as the suitable technique to realize the concept of Broadband Integrated Service Digital Networks which support diierent kinds of services such as voice, video and data in the future. However, from the economic point of view the new ATM technology has to inter-work with other existing network technologies such as TCP/IP in which the worldwide compute...
متن کاملBuffer reservation for TCP over ATM networks
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has already been a widely used protocol in many networks. Recent studies show that the performance of TCP over ATM networks is severely degraded. In this paper, we propose to apply the buffer reservation technique on TCP traffic over ATM networks. While the ATM block transfer (ABT) method (Boyer, 1992) is to reserve bandwidth for bursts of cells, our proposed...
متن کاملImproved WWW Multimedia Transmission Performance in HTTP/TCP over ATM Networks
Transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) is the de facto standard of the networking world. It dynamically adjusts routing of packets to accommodate failures in channels and allows construction of very large networks with little central management. But IP packets are based on the datagram model and are not really suited to real-time traffic. In order to overcome the drawbacks, a ...
